Teaching results

Competence: Built-up basic cultural sensitivity a developed cultural awareness.
Knowledge: Understanding the impact of culture on communication and manifestations of culture in communication, primarily in intercultural interactions stemming from mastering basic terminology and comprehension of selected theories of culture and communication.
Skills: Ability to adequately assess and analyse a particular communication encounter in an intercultural context so that its understanding results in successful communication at the relevant level of the German language command.

1. Culture – an introduction
2. Characteristics of culture (values, beliefs, traditions, the symbol systems, rituals)
3. Structure of culture: differences – subcultures, professional/occupational subcultures
4. Culture shock
5. Stereotypes, prejudice - English speaking countries
6. Communication – an introduction
7. Forms of communication: verbal and non-verbal
8. Impact of culture on communication – case studies, real-life intercultural encounters
9. Intercultural communication
10. Communication in diplomatic practice as an example of overcoming differences
11. Written communication in a professional setting
12. Non-verbal communication in a professional setting

Requirements to complete the course

Project (assessed work) and its presentation – 40%
Final examination – 60%

Student workload
