Teaching results

After completing the course, students will have a good orientation in the international context of international trade and investment at the macro level, with emphasis on the functioning of the World Trade Organization and the legal regulation of international flows of investment.
Knowledge:
Deep knowledge and understanding of the characteristics, principles and rules of operation of individual branches of international economic law, understanding the corelation between international law, international economic law and national law
understanding of characteristics, principles and rules of operation of individual branches of international economic law, understanding of the relationship between international law, the ability to critically analyze the current legislation of individual branches of international economic law including its advantages and challenges
Competences: understanding the legal aspects of international economic relations.
Skills: the ability to work with various sources of international economic law, including the decisions of relevant dispute settlement bodies, and to apply the knowledge acquired in analyzing current issues in international economic relations.

International Economic Law. Law of the multilateral trading system. Fundamental priciples and rules of the multilateral trading system. WTO reform. Legal framework for international investment. International investment dispute settlement system. International development law. Legal aspects of international economic integration.

Syllabus

1. International Economic Law - sources, subjects, principles of IEL, relationship between IEL, international public law and EU law, concept of economic sovereignty of the state. 2. Law of the multilateral trading system – fundamentals of the WTO legal framework. 3. Fundamental priciples and rules of the multilateral trading system – main principles, rules for market access, rules on unfair competition – dumping, subsidies, exceptions from rules of the multilateral trading system rules – general exceptions, security exceptions, economic integration exceptions. 4. WTO reform – reform agenda, attitudes of key international players in the multilateral treading system. 5. Legal framework for international investment – economic and legal dimension of international investment; investor, host state; sources of international investment law; legal regime of international investment protection, historical overview and current developments in international investmetn protection. 6. International investment dispute settlement system – legal framework and current developments in international investor-state dispute settlement. 7. International development law - concept, subject, sources, basic international legal framework, institutional connections, sustainable development goals. 8. Legal aspects of international economic integration.
