Teaching results

The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the Russian culture and the culture of Russian-speaking countries with the focus on understanding various aspects of the Russian culture as well as the impact of culture on communication, especially in intercultural encounters. By completing the course students will acquire:
Knowledge: Basic knowledge in the field of the Russian culture and manifestation of culture in intercultural communication.
Skills: Ability to adequately assess and apply the acquired knowledge in a particular communication encounter in Russian on an adequate level.
Competence: Built-up basic cultural sensitivity and developed cultural awareness towards the Russian culture as well as other cultures, improved language and communication competencies.

1. Culture and communication – an introduction
2. Standards of culture – comparison of Slovakia, Russia and other Russian-speaking countries
3. Elements of culture – comparison of Slovakia, Russia and other Russian-speaking countries (symbols, rituals, values etc.)
4. Stereotypes, prejudice – Russia and Russian-speaking countries
5. Culture shock – Russia and Russian-speaking countries
6. Verbal and non-verbal communication – real-life intercultural encounters
7. Specifics of written communication – Russian language in a professional setting
8. Intercultural communication – real-life communication encounters
9. Specifics of Russian culture – gastronomy, dining, traditions and habits, etc.
10. Specifics of Russian culture – professional context
11. Specifics of Russian culture – the art in Russia and Russian-speaking countries
12. Historical development of Russia – history and culture
