Teaching results

Students will possess following abilities:
- after successful completion of the course, the student has experience in the necessary macroeconomic frameworks of international trade in advanced theoretical background, has a systematic and comprehensive set of current knowledge about international trade at the level of the world economy.
- by understanding the required literature and selected sources with a high citation response at the international level, student is able to process a set of theoretical knowledge within the field of study and study program as a basis for profiling his own topic,
- the PhD. student has experience in current trends in international trade and global value chains, the dynamics of trade in goods and services in the international environment, with an emphasis placed on the territorial priorities of the EU and Slovakia (PRC, Russian Federation, Southeast Asia, etc.),
- understanding current trends in key areas of international trade - digitization, payment terms, international marketing, offshoring and outsourcing, fragmentation of value chains and deglobalization elements.
Students will obtain following skills:
- after identifying the literature gap in the particular topic of the seminar work, the PhD. student is able to evaluate innovative approaches and methods of research in international
- trade,
- the PhD. student is able to formulate new hypotheses and apply new approaches in his own research relating to partial topic of international trade,
- ability to answer relevantly the professional questions from international trade before the examination commission in a broader context referring to the topic of the seminar work, course content, but also multidisciplinary scope.
Students will gain following competences:
- by participating in lectures and seminars, as well as by preparing a seminar paper, an understanding of scientific approaches in modern international trade and the issue of global value chains at the scientific level,
- critical evaluation of the problem formulated in the form of case studies and the argumentation of own attitude based on processed primary data,
- orientation in advanced databases of statistics and platforms of international trade (OECD, ITC, WTO, Amadeus, etc.), as well as databases of scientific works of fundamental importance in the particular field,
- own critical evaluation and synthesis of theoretical knowledge, formulation of own approaches and research methods, presentation of research results in the field of international trade,
- active and relevant participation within the thematic profile discussions based on data and facts, formulation of the key findings and outcomes of the research using synthesis, competences to defend own research and data based opinion within the discussions at the PhD. Students level as well as course teachers (committee).

• Specifics of the international energy market.
• Dynamics of the position of selected countries in international trade.
• Theoretical definition of global value chains. Critical assessment of the V4 countries´ participation in GVCs and its triggers.
• Current trends in value chain research and their application in the Slovak Republic.
• The phenomenon of competitiveness in international trade. Export competitiveness and its meaning.
• New trends in payment instruments in international trade and international marketing.
• Digitization and the impact of Industry 4.0. Preparedness of economies for implementation Industry 4.0.
• Selected aspects of international business operations.

Syllabus

• Contemporary international trade theories in the works of distinguished economists. • Global value chains (GVCs) - definition, transformations, trends in fragmentation and localization, application on the Slovak economy. Investigation of trends in international trade through TiVA parameters. • New scientific approaches in the field of GVCs transformation. • Scientific polemics on the definition of international competitiveness, the Porter vs. Krugman approach, international energy market - trends, impact of decarbonization, price volatility and impact on terms of trade of selected economies. • Territorial analyses of "emerging markets" and consequences for the territorial and commodity structure of international trade (goods and commercial services) and international business (foreign direct investment). • Determinants of exporters’ competitiveness and their application in the works of contemporary authors. • Industry 4.0 and the impact on international trade, digitization of international trade and its specifics, digitization of payment system and adaptation of international marketing. • Selected aspects and new trends in international business operations, classic vs. innovative approaches.

Requirements to complete the course

• 10% - Active participation in discussion within the consultations
• 30% - Semester work
• 60% - Colloquium in front of the committee and defense of the semester work
Semestral works are problem-oriented (formulated) assignments on the chosen scientific topic, the topics will be published before the beginning of the semester.
