Teaching results

By completing the course, students acquire knowledge of the legal regulation of consumer protection and gain an understanding of it, familiarize themselves with the relevant legal terminology, and learn to use it correctly.
Graduates will be able to navigate the sources of consumer law, understand the relevant interconnections, apply the knowledge acquired in practical situations, and identify the aspects that require particular attention when concluding consumer contracts.
By successfully completing the course, they will be able to prevent the consequences associated with unfair terms in consumer contracts. They will be able to read and interpret legal provisions with an understanding of the basic legal concepts and institutions of consumer law and to apply them. They will be able to assert their rights arising from consumer legal relationships.

Indicative content

The concept, subject matter and sources of consumer law. Basic concepts of consumer law. Consumer protection in European Union law. Consumer protection under the Consumer Protection Act. Consumer contracts. Unfair terms in consumer contracts. Consumer sales contracts and their specific features. Distance contracts and off-premises contracts. Unfair commercial practices, misleading actions, misleading omissions and aggressive commercial practices. Unsolicited visits to consumers and sales events. The powers of public authorities in the field of consumer protection. Consumer associations and other legal persons established for the protection of consumers. Supervisory authorities in the field of consumer protection and their competences. Sanctions and proceedings concerning breaches of obligations. Consumer protection under the Commercial Code. Unfair competition. Legal Remedies against unfair competition. Consumer protection in the financial market. The Act on Consumer Credits and on Other Credits and Loans for Consumers and on the Amendment and Supplementation of Certain Acts. Judicial protection of consumers. Consumer disputes. Proceedings in consumer matters under the Civil Dispute Code. Alternative methods of consumer dispute resolution, consumer arbitration proceedings, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution.

Requirements to complete the course

- 10% - continuous semester evaluation;
- 30% - semester seminar project;
- 60% - written exam.
