A student who completes an internship in a programme designated EMOS should have the following outcomes:
Knowledge
- Understanding the official statistics system: the student should gain practical experience and understanding of the functioning of the official statistics system, including the role and organisation of the European Statistical System (ESS) and other related institutions.
- Knowledge of production models and methods: during the internship, the student should apply various methods of statistical production, such as censuses, administrative data and big data, and should be able to manage production processes with an emphasis on quality.
Skills
- Application of statistical methods: the internship will enable the student to apply advanced statistical methods in practice, including data processing methods such as imputation techniques, time series analysis, and the use of statistical software such as R or Python.
Competencies
- Ability to present and disseminate data: during the internship, the student should acquire skills in the effective presentation and dissemination of data, using modern communication tools and technologies to present statistical results.
- Solving practical problems in a real environment: The internship will provide the student with the opportunity to solve specific practical tasks and problems in a real work environment, including data protection and ensuring statistical confidentiality.
Indicative content
Introduction and preparation (week 1)
- Workplace orientation: become familiar with the environment, structure and functions of the organisation.
- Introduction to official statistics: lectures or workshops on the official statistics system, including the role of the European Statistical System (ESS) and its components.
- Setting practice goals: discussion with the mentor about practice goals, expected outcomes and assignment of specific tasks.
Data Analysis and Statistical Methods (Weeks 2 - 5)
- Data collection and processing: working with real data, collecting it, cleaning it and preparing it for analysis.
- Application of statistical methods: use of statistical methods such as sampling, imputation, time series analysis, seasonality adjustment and other relevant techniques.
- Data quality: training on data quality dimensions and methods for monitoring and assessing quality.
Thematic statistics and practical application (weeks 6 - 8)
- Specialised areas of statistics: work on specific statistical topics such as economic and financial statistics, social statistics, environmental statistics, etc.
- Project work: the student is involved in a specific project that involves the collection, processing and analysis of data in one of the following subject areas.
Dissemination and presentation of data (weeks 9 - 11)
- Data visualisation: working with data presentation tools, including the creation of tables, graphs and interactive visualisations.
- Preparation of reports and presentations: writing and presenting a report or analytical document that summarizes the findings and results of the analyses conducted during the internship.
- Expert feedback: Presentation of results to experts in the statistical office, obtaining feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Final evaluation and reflection (weeks 12 - 13)
- Practice assessment: student self-assessment, feedback from mentor and final assessment of achievement of practice objectives.
- Career Opportunities Discussion: Consultation on career opportunities in the field of official statistics, recommendations for further training and professional development plans.
- Final Report: Submission of a written report summarizing the experience, knowledge and skills gained during the internship.
Documentation requirements
- Practice diary: Students keep a daily record of the activities they have carried out during the practice.
- Final Report: A detailed report on the overall progress of the internship that includes all major activities, lessons learned, and any problems encountered by the student.
Requirements to complete the course
Certificate of professional practice in the relevant organisation
- The traineeship must be carried out in a national statistical office (SRS), a central bank (NBS), another national authority, an international organisation or another partner organisation, and must focus on work relevant to the field of official statistics
- Preparation and submission of the final report of the professional practice (achieving a minimum of 51% of the assessment)
